Volkswagen Beetle Ends Its Journey After 81 Years

Volkswagen has ended the production of Beetle after 81 years of its launch. The vehicle clad in a Stonewashed Blue Mettalic coupe was rolled out from the company’s plant in Puebla, Mexico. The vehicle will not be sold but displayed at the carmaker’s local museum in Puebla.

The latest version of the car was a “Beetle Final Edition” that was equipped with Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs, LED taillights and 18-inch disc white aluminium alloy wheels. Other features of the car included a 6.3-inch touchscreen navigation system, a Fender premium audio system, leather seats with diamond-stitched design and a panoramic sunroof. The car was powered by a 174 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine and produced a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Volkswagen Beetle was first set in Nazi, Germany under the supervision of Adolf Hitler. Ferdinand Porsche introduced Beetle as people’s car. The second-generation Beetle was launched in 1998, while the third-generation hit the roads in 2011. VW made the Beetle sleeker with its third-gen making it more coup-like where the sloping roof blended perfectly with the rear.

The second and third generation of Volkswagen Beetle has been collectively produced in over 23 with various exterior colours, 32 interior trims, 13 varying engine configurations and 19 special editions, including Dune, Denim, Coast and Pink and sold in both coupe and convertible variants. The second and third-gen units of the iconic car have been built by Volkswagen de Mexico, Puebla, which was sold in 91 markets globally.

Even with high sales at the initial stage, in the year 2018, the company only sold 14.411 Beetles in the U.S., the lowest since 2011 when VW changed from the second-gen Beetle to the current generation.

The end in the production of such an iconic car is indeed news of disappointment but not to forget the role it has played in the evolution of the new brand will be cherished forever.
